Pony Clubs all over the world benefit from a tried and true standardized theory curriculum. This consists of 10 one hour sessions following a pony club guide which is provided on line from the Canadian Pony Club. These classroom sessions are broken down into topics on Grooming, Feeding, Saddlery, Stable and Pasture, Veterinary, Foot and Shoeing, and Conformation and Soundness. At Penticton Pony club these one hour sessions take place one evening per week starting in the fall and carrying through until February when a break in the theory classes is taken in order to prepare for Quiz.

In Early April a review session is planned which is then followed by a written exam. In this way Pony club members move up the levels. It should be stated here that test writing is not a requisite for membership and members can choose to attend sessions for purely interest and learning sake. That said, most members endeavor to take the written tests in order that they can take the practical portion later in the year and move up to the next level.

Any member wishing to test their level must meet a 60% attendance requirement for the scheduled theory and stable management sessions.

The Pony club curriculum follows a graduated progression assuming no initial knowledge at the D level and carrying through to the A level where, if achieved, they are certified riding instructors with a highly accredited international standard.

The 9 levels are as follows:

  1. D
  2. D1
  3. D2
  4. C
  5. C1
  6. C2
  7. B
  8. B2
  9. A

Members can be as young as 7 years and as old as 25. Members turning 26 must then become associate members. Young people of all levels of prior knowledge and horse experience are welcome to join and may challenge their first level of entry up to the C2 level.

The groups are small and personable and the instructors strive to make the sessions fun and interesting. Along the way members also have the opportunity to participate in a badge program designed to challenge their knowledge through a variety of independent work projects. These horse related projects could be anything from designing and building a barn model to attending equine first aid courses or making visual presentations on various topics of interest of all things Equine.

Pony Club prides itself in being purveyors of a high quality horse care and membership safety education program.
