Every year, a Canadian Pony Club in each region hosts an event called "Championships". It consists of two disciplines – Dressage and Stadium. Despite the fact that Pony Club is based on the sport of Three-Day Eventing, this unique competition does not feature the Cross-Country phase and is run like any ordinary Hunter/Jumper and Dressage show would be (except they are combined). The event is usually run over two days – the first consists of Stadium rounds and the second would be the Dressage. Participants are usually welcome to arrive a day early, when warm-up rounds are usually held that include the help of coaches if needed. When Championships has officially started, the Jumpers are held for the majority of the day as there are many different sorts of classes and heights that suit beginners doing cross-poles or even a B-2 level Pony Clubber doing 3’6" courses. On the morning of the second day, the Dressage rides start. Each participant rides two different tests at their indicated level before the awards ceremony is held. Pony Club Championships tends to gather good sponsors for prizes and has many separate awards, such as "Best Groomed Pony", just for fun. For each discipline, a rider is placed on a team with members from either their home club or other clubs and points are accumulated to earn a separate award during the ceremony. And last but not least, the decorations! Each Pony Club usually comes prepared with a theme to decorate all of their stalls …whether it is a journey back to Medieval Times or a relaxing summer beach, the choice is yours and special prizes are given to the club with the best idea. Championships travels to a new location in the region annually, and it is exciting to be able to show in different parts of your area if you don’t normally do so. The competitive atmosphere is more relaxed than a typical show as only riders who are registered in Pony Club can compete. It is usually a smaller show that is great for a green horse or rider adapting to a show environment. |
